Measuring the draft tube and wick to know the wick required

In the period between World War I and World War II, quite a few heaters were manufactured which were in fact basic clones of the Perfection 500 heater.  The actual font arrangement was virtually the same as a Perfection 500, and the heaters used the "500" wick.  In many cases, the actual cabinetry of some of these heaters, such as the Barler, had sturdy cast iron tops and legs, and were actually far superior to the Perfection brand heater.

There are some heaters which use a Perfection-size wick but NOT the Perfection wick carrier:   The US Stove Co. #US-89A is one of these, as are Miller and B&H "Smokeless Oil Heaters." Use wick #3L below for these heaters. (The "United D-81" is like the Wards "Porto" heater and uses the Porto wick below.)

The Perfection heater design was a scaled up circular draft flame spreader lamp, which is what the company produced when founded in 1888.  The 1913 Perfection patent was for the movable flame spreader, not the heater, and even the flame spreader patent was shaky, so other manufacturers simply duplicated the Perfection fount, gallery and flame spreader.

NESCO #348 WICK

OLD PERFECTION WICK

US STOVE WICK

So many Perfection heater clones were sold that some manufacturers had their own brand name on heater wicks.  Above left is an original NOS NESCO wick.  The cute little round box is marked "Number 348.  8 1/2" circumference - for use in all Standard Size 3 and 4 quart founts of Nesco De Luxe Oil Heaters, Numbers 30, 40.  Also for Nesco Tropical Oil Heaters, Numbers 012, 015.   To trim, rub with cloth or paper."  Above right, a US Stove Co "500" wick.   Click photos to enlarge.

For more information on how to operate or replace the wick on a Barler, Nesco, New Process or other Perfection clone, the information pages on Perfection heaters are applicable.

Rare Original Miller #451 wick (above). Beautiful ''New Old Stock." The wick sleeve is the same diameter as the Perfection 500 wick sleeve (shown below) and very similar to the NESCO #348 wick shown above, with many perforations for the star wheel wick riser gears to engage the wick sleeve.  Wick #3L can be used in this wick sleeve (more information below).  This wick sleeve can be used in other obsolete heaters requiring the same diameter wick sleeve (2 3/4'' to 2 7/8'') which used vertical rows of slots in the sleeve for the gearing, NOT for use where the gear slots are at an angle, such as some models of Florence heaters.

WARDS PORTO HEATER

At long last I can make wicks to fit the Wards Porto heater.

The Wards "Porto" heater (#7407600A or 84076600A and Ward's 15u7600a) appears to be a variation of the Perfection 325 fount, but it was actually unique unto itself.  The Porto Heater wick sleeve is 2.6'' outside diameter. If the wick sleeve in your Wards Porto looks like the one at right and the outside diameter is 2.6'' inches, I can now make custom-made wicks that will fit the Porto. [US Stove #E-8, E-81 & United Stove E-89; Valor 525; Ward's Windsor no. 760 (NOT A153 or 8-81) require wick #3L above.]
The Porto font and wick sleeve look like this >>>

Wards Porto custom heater wick, $14.95
(Wick only, NOT with the wick sleeve!)

Very Early Heaters (1888 - 1892)

Very early heaters were made using #3 size store lamp fonts modified to fit into a heater body. The Barler Radiant heater font shown at right still used the long "finger" method of holding the wick against the draft tube so the wick could be adjusted up and down. These early heaters usually used wick #3L, the same wick used in "store lamp" fonts as first patented by Rochester in 1885. The font minus burner at right is of a "Barler Radiant" heater with patents from 1888 to 1892.  After this model Barler heaters were identified with a model number. Barler heater numbers 3, 4, 5, 10 and 12 also used wick #3L but with differing wick raiser mechanisms.

Florence Heaters (models 81-21, -24, -25; 82-21, -24, -25; 83-12, -24, -25;  H-81, -82, -83 -84, -85, -86 -87, -88.)
(Note:  Some Florence stoves and heaters used kindler wicking.)

Remove the old wick by removing the three pins holding the wick in the wick sleeve: those pins are shown in the photo at far right laying on the wick.  Slide wick #3L into the wick sleeve so that 1 1/2" of the top wick is exposed above the wick sleeve and the "tails" of the wick are below the wick sleeve. Cut the tails to have 4 tails, as shown at far right.  Using a button hole stitch, tack the wick into the wick sleeve, making sure the wick is smoothly against all sides of the inside of the wick sleeve.  Reinstall the wick and wick sleeve in the heater by pushing down the sleeve until it contacts the gears.

Miller #451 Heater

The Miller 451 heater used a wick sleeve very similar to the Florence above.  Wick #3L is installed in exactly the same way.  Earlier Miller heaters were literally slightly modified "store lamp" fonts, some even with the gallery with chimney fingers, others without chimney fingers, and used wick #3L without a removable wick sleeve.   Click the photo at right to enlarge it.  (Note:  The Miller 555 wick sleeve is 2.840'' in diameter, slightly larger than the Perfection 500 and Miller #451 wick sleeves at 2.750'' diameter, and the Miller 555 wick is thicker at 0.138'' in thickness.  Wick #3L will fit existing Miller 555 wick sleeves.

The Clones which DO NOT take a 331X wick or Perfection 500 wick

There were some stoves made which resembled the Perfection cook stove (Ivanhoe, etc), but they did NOT use the Perfection 331X wick OR the Kerogas #20 wick.  If you have a stove which requires a Kerogas or Miller "666" wick, the stove is in good condition and you have good wick carriers (as shown below), you can sew a wick into the carrier and have a working stove.  My 3 5/8" x 24" flat wicks have enough length of material to make two wicks. (See Perfection 441 wick instructions.)

Above left:  Perfection 331X wick

Carrier width: 3 1/4"; height 2 3/8"
 Wick height: 3 9/16"

Above middle:  Kerogas #20 wick

Carrier width:  3 3/8"; height 2 5/16" Wick height:  3 3/8"

Above right:  Miller "666" wick

Carrier width:  3 9/16", height 2 1/2" Wick height:  3 5/8"

The three wicks above are NOT interchangeable.  The Kerogas and Miller wicks have not been manufactured in decades.  The stove model brand names they fit are listed below.   Note that the same brand name "cloned" stove makers also sold models using a glass bottle to feed an edge-burning wick via gravity flow, an entirely different principle of operation with different wicks.

Perfection 331X wick on left, Miller 666 wick on the right >>>

The wicks are NOT interchangeable!

Blue Bird and Miller "666" wicks: if the stove is in good condition and you have good wick carriers (as shown above), you can sew a wick into the carrier and have a working stove.  My 3 5/8" x 24" flat wicks have enough length of material to make two wicks. (See Perfection 441 wick instructions.)

Blue Bird wicks are interchangeable with Miller No. 666 wicks, with a wick sleeve 3.57'' (3 9/16") OD, 3.3" ID and 2 7/16" high.  Overall wick height is 3 5/8".

HOW TO MEASURE TO DETERMINE THE WICK SIZE REQUIRED

The diameter of the draft tube determines the wick required by the heater.  The draft tube is easier to measure if the burner is removed, which leaves the draft tube as the only thing protruding from the tank. You can see right through the draft tube to the floor, rug or drip pan beneath the fuel tank (font) so it is easy to identify.  In the illustration below, left, the draft tube on this heater measures 2.696''.  The draft tube on a Perfection heater measures 2.50'' so a Perfection wick or wick #3L will not fit this heater; in this case the measurement is typical for a European heater using a 71mm diameter wick.

If there is a fragment of wick existing, please remove the wick from the wick sleeve or wick carrier.  Lay the wick flat and press it flat, then measure ACROSS the flat so I can have that measurement.  A Perfection clone that uses wick #3L will be 4 3/8'' wide flat measurement.

http://www.milesstair.com/Perfection/Porto_font.jpg

A wick to fit the wick sleeve above must be a solid tube - no tails on the wick, and the wick fits on the outside of the draft tube.  Click on the photo to enlarge.

The wick above extends below the wick sleeve and must have ''tails'' on the wick, as shown. In this case the wick is 4 3/8'' wide and wick #3L will fit inside the wick sleeve.

It is important to note if the wick fits on the inside or outside of the wick sleeve and the diameter of the wick sleeve.  A wick fitting on the outside of a wick sleeve must be larger in diameter than a wick fitting on the inside of a wick sleeve. See the photo illustrations below.

Assumptions or guesses just are not accurate enough for finding the proper wick for a heater, and photos of a burner cannot be accurately measured because there is no perspective in a photo for relative size.

Some sample measurements of the outside diameter of draft tubes:

  • Perfection 500 draft tube:  2.5''

  • Florence models 81-21, -24, -25; 82-21, -24, -25; 83-12, -24, -25;  H-81, -82, -83 -84, -85, -86 -87, -88:   2.5'', same as a Perfection heater.

  • Florence Model 10 draft tube is 3 1/16'' diameter.

  • Florence H-124 draft tube is 3 3/4'' diameter and the wick sleeve is 4 1/4'' in diameter.

  • Acme No. 215,  4.705'' draft tube diameter.

  • Aladdin B-61, C-10.C20, S-1 & S-2, 3'' diameter.

  • Buhl No. 11, 3'' diameter.

  • Puritan #44, 1.910" diameter.

  • Standard New Process 40B, 3.031".

New Process Stove Co. Standard 40B

The New Process was made by Standard Lighting Co in Cleveland. They also made the Globe Incandescent lamps such as those seen in my photo album for lamps. www.milesstair.com/lamps/Standard_Lighting_Flame_Spreader.jpg

"The Standard Lighting Company, of Cleveland, Ohio, advertised No. 2 and No. 3 Globe-Incandescent lamps. The fount and burner were primarily sold for "New Process" heaters and a mammoth hanging lamp. However, the fount was also fitted into decorative cast-metal stands and sold for table use. Some stands to use lamps on the table were a modified heater base. The table and banquet lamps were large due to the sizes of the founts and burners. The company advertised its Incandescent lamp as "the original large coal oil lamp," holding oil for eight hours of burning. Large catalogs, published from the mid-1880s to late 1890s, illustrated vapor street lights, wall torches, and an increasing number of New Process stoves and ranges. It seems the company first produced lamps and torches, branching into cooking ovens, heaters, and more elaborate stoves about 1897."

"The company changed its name from the Standard Lighting Company to New Process Lighting Co. about 1900. Thomas J. Little, Jr., assigned patents to the company for gas lighting improvements in 1902. Little went on to assign patents for city gas lamps to the Welsbach Light Company, Gloucester, New Jersey, after 1909. Courter, Center Draft Lamps.

There are no parts for the New Process 40B heater more than one hundred years after they were made, but if all the parts are there I can make a wick to fit the New Process 40B heater.  See the listing above to order a wick.
